Colin Clement is a Sydney based ophthalmologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, cataract and general ophthalmology. He provides consultation at the Eye Associates (Macquarie Street, Sydney), North Shore Eye Centre (St Leonards) and Wyong Eye Surgery with surgery offered at the Ophthalmic Surgery Centre (Chatswood) and Central Coast Day Hospital (Erina). He is also a staff specialist in the glaucoma unit at Sydney Eye Hospital and a clinical senior lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Sydney.
In 1994, Dr Clement graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science (1st class honours). He spent the next 3 years researching the neurophysiology of neural networks in the spinal cord and brainstem coordinating reactions to pain. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Sydney for this work in 1999.
Dr Clement studied, Medicine and Surgery at the University of Sydney, graduating in 2001. Following 3 years of general resident training at the Royal North Shore Hospital (St Leonards), he then completed a glaucoma research fellowship at Eye Associates (Sydney) with Professor Ivan Goldberg. In 2005, he commenced advanced vocational ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital.
In 2009, Dr Clement moved to the United Kingdom to undertake subspecialty fellowship training and initially worked as a fellow in clinical ophthalmology at the Royal United Hospital (Bath, UK) where he helped Mr Roger Baer run the glaucoma service. In 2010, he was appointed senior glaucoma fellow at the Western Eye Hospital (London, UK) where he worked with Professor Philip Bloom and Professor Francesca Cordeiro. In this role, he was an investigator in 3 clinical trials on glaucoma and gained advanced training in glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage device surgery, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation and the Glaukos iStent. He received a grant from Glaucoma Australia to attend the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in early 2011 to learn novel surgical techniques for glaucoma management with Professor Tarek Shaarawy.
In addition to clinical and research activities, Dr Clement is passionate about medical education and research. As a clinical senior lecturer for the University of Sydney, he gives lectures and tutorials in ophthalmology to medical and masters students, nurses, optometrists and other medical staff.
Dr Clement has provided peer review for many ophthalmology journals including Ophthalmology, The British Journal of Ophthalmology, The Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Graefe’s Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Research, Clinical Ophthalmology and Clinical Optometry.
Dr Clement is an associate managing editor for the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice. He is also on the editorial board of Eye and Brain and Journal of Ophthalmology and serves onthe Board of Directors of the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA).
